My plaint at last evoked

My plaint at last evoked
Responses from heaven;
The veil is removed,
And speech is vouchsafed to me.

Ecstasies in love
Have an even tenor:
Consuming fire of passion
From the first to the last.

The rule of manly conduct
For all nations should be:
The sword and lance come first,
The harp and lyre last.

The mind’s rites of drinking
Are strange indeed in the West:
Intoxication first,
Intoxicants last.

Nadir Shah’s glory,
And Tamburlaine’s splendour,
Writ in sand they were,
In the annals of time.

After the moments of Presence,
Solitude will be mine;
The cloud and the lightning
Will now split a part.
